We had a great week last week. Our visit to Joseph's farm was hot but very fun. We learned a lot about animals and the food we eat. The student's had a chance to hold the animals and do some of the farm chores. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Monday, May 31st, Memorial Day-No school.

Tuesday June 1st: This is our last school day! I will be giving one final grammar quiz to the students on noun clauses, run-ons and combining sentences. Hopefully this quiz will help everyone's writing grade since we worked on the exercises in class and everyone had plenty of opportunity to ask questions and should be very comfortable with these concepts. We are also doing a pot luck lunch today.

Answer the following questions about Sonny's Blues. They can be typewritten or written in your Readers/Writers Notebook.1, There are a number of themes in the story including suffering, darkness, feeling trapped and wanting to escape. How can you tie all these into one dominant theme that is suggested in the title "Sonny's Blues?"2. Themes in stories challenge you to think about what the author is saying to you. What sorts of thoughts have you had as a result of reading this story?3. The story develops it's themes around the relationship between two brothers. But there is a flashback in the middle of the story that tells of the narrator's conversation with his mother. How does that part of the story contribute to the dominant theme?

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Your final writing project of the quarter is due on Thursday May 27th. This is a compare and contrast essay of Flowers for Algernon (the book) and Charly the movie. This essay must have an introduction and conclusion and use one of the two methods of comparing and contrasting that I showed you in class:

Intro-similarities, differences, conclusion OR Intro. Topic (same/difference), Topic 2 (same/difference), Conclusion.

Choose a poem that is meaningful to you. You can find this on the internet or in a poetry book. Explain what this poem means in your own words and why this is meaningful to you. This response must be one full page typed, 12 pt Ariel Font, single spaced, one inch margins. During our next class together (after the trip) we will discuss poetry further and you will be asked to write your own poem. This is due on Tuesday May 4th.

Everyone wrote a process paragraph last week. You will plan a 4 minute speech for the class in which you will demonstrate a process. It does not have to be the same one you wrote about and you are welcome to bring in props to dress up your speech. You will be graded on how well you explain the process, your creativity, how well you present and do not read and your ability to stay close to 4 minutes.

Friday:

Your character analysis of a character from Flowers for Algernon is due today.

*I am not going to assign a particular length but you do need to consider the following:
*Physical appearance
*Personality traits (must be supported by examples
*Their role in the story.
*How the character makes you feel . Do you like or dislike the character?
*Does the character change or stay the same throughout the novel? (this must be supported with specific examples from the novel)

Cut and paste it 14 times on a piece of paper to distribute to the class and teacher. Students have Spring Trip the following week so the test will be on Tuesday, 5/4/10.

Remember quotes should not just be thrown in. They must fit into the point you are making and quotes do not contribute to the 5-7 sentences that make up a paragraph.

Wednesday:

Science Outline of Chapter 1 in your new science book is due. We are going to Group 2 to help them with their science fair projects so we will not have science today. I will be taking time out of a writing class to talk to you about the chapter.

Grammar: After our extensive review of adjective and adverb phrases and clauses I am giving you one final assignment on this. We have reviewed this over and over again and the last time I asked if there were any questions there were none so I am confident you all get this now. The sentences should be as follows: 3 sentences containing an adjective clause, 3 sentences containing an adverb clause, 3 sentences containing an adjective phrase, and 3 sentences containing an adverb phrase. DAR AWARDS:
Max Petersen in Group 5G (Local and State Winner) and Lily Bailey (Local and State Honorable Mention) in Group 5B will be receiving awards at two ceremonies. The state ceremony is on February 22nd at the Plymouth Library at 2:00 p.m. The local ceremony will be March 14th at the Samuel Holten House in Ipswich. Max and Lily will be reading their essays at the local ceremony. Congratulations to both for a job well done.

SPELLING BEE: Groups 4, 5G and 5B will be taking a short break from Wordly Wise to prepare for a Spelling Bee. We will be using an actual list from the 1984 Scripps Spelling Bee! They will be tested ONLY on spelling of 15-20 words, not vocabulary and parts of speech, each week. Finally, on Tuesday, February 16th, we will have a live Spelling Bee between the three groups from 1p.m.-2:00pm.

HIGH SCHOOL: No Basic Writing homework due Monday. The time of our basic writing class is changing to the morning on Monday so I will see you next Monday at 10:45. This week we did not have class on Tuesday due to the problem with the heat. Therefore, your assignment for this week is in your mailbox in the classroom. Please make sure you check the mailbox and complete the assignment by Monday January 25th.

Algebra/Pre-Algebra: No homework for Monday. Remember your math notebook counted as a test grade so if you did not pass that in to me you received a zero for last quarter. Let's start this quarter strong and use the proper format and show all your work. If you do this it will be an easy "A" for the notebook next quarter. You should arrive at school with the article, a one page, 12 pt Arial font, single spaced summary of this article. The one page should also include the answer to this question. Does the portrayal of Muslim's in this article coincide with what we learned in class about the Islam religion and Muslim behavior?
Also be thinking about your History Day Project. See the handout and determine what format you will complete this in and whether you would like to work as an individual or in a group. We can only submit 14 entries for all of group 5 so some of you will be required to work in groups.
History optional Extra Credit is Due Wednesday on January 6th. This is a minimum of two pages, single spaced 12 pt Arial font paper. You are the monarch of a medieval town: how will the town be governed, how will people live, what will they do for jobs etc.

Science: Actively Read Chapter 3. Be prepared to discuss in class on Wednesday January 6.

Complete the POV Assignment we started in class: To refresh your memory the assignment is as follows: 1. Copy two paragraphs from your independent reading book and identify the point of view. 2. Write the sentence you find them in and the page number. Then write a sentence of your own using that vocab. word. 4. Identify five adjectives. Write the sentence and the page number and circle the adjective. 5. Identify five adverbs. Write the sentence and the page number and circle the adverb. 6. Identify 5 subordinate clauses. Write the subordinate clause and the page number.

Read your independent reading book for 20 minutes. If last week you created a postcard for the setting of your book this week I would like you to make an acrostic poem. We discussed what this was in class but see me if you do not remember. Likewise, if you already did the acrostic poem please do a postcard. Below are the two assignments in case you forget.

Create a postcard for the setting of your story. It should have a picture on one side and a short letter on the other like a postcard. In the letter, you should take the point of view of one of the characters and describe your experiences so far in the place where the story takes place.

Acrostic Poem-Create an acrostic poem using the title of your book. Since I have not read the book please include a short paragraph below explaining why each of the things you list is relevant to your story.

Students will dine without utensils on: bread and cheese medieval pizza, ginger carrot soup, family style mussels, one large beef, rib per person, salad with balsamic dipping sauce, herb roasted chicken, broccoli and carrots with hollandaise dipping sauce, mock – mead with a token for a refill, after dinner mints Groups 5B and 5G will be going to Medieval Manor to complement their study of Medieval history. We will be dining on medieval cuisine without utensils and playing games common to this historical period.

Groups 5B and 5G will be going to Biogen IDEC Community Lab on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 to do an experiment on the transformation of E. Coli. Students will don goggles, lab coats and gloves in order to work with scientific laboratory equipment to investigate DNA proteins. We will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. and return by pick-up at 3:00 p.m. Students are asked to bring a bag lunch (no glass) and non-messy snack to eat in the van in case our lab runs longer. Please wear appropriate clothing if there is a chance of inclement weather as we may have to walk from the parking space to the lab. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see how interesting and exciting a career in science can be!

Robby, Ben, John and Harry your assignment is different. Complete the top of p.33 and do Science in the News that is somehow related to what we are learning in Chapter 1. This should be one page typed, 12 point font, Ariel, single spaced.
Many of you finished the reading assignment that I gave you two class periods to do last week. However if you did not it is due today. That assignment required you to make 5 comments on the 20 minutes of reading you had done the night before. Then, you needed to find 15 new or age appropriate vocabulary words from your independent reading book, define them, write their part of speech and use them in a sentence. This should be done in the vocabulary section of your reader's notebook.

HIGH SCHOOL

Basic Writing: (High School) If I asked you to revise your 5 paragraph essay please do so. For next week please complete page 9 in the Writing Skills Book and pass in the first draft of your "How To" essay that has been peer edited by one person. I will also be giving you a quiz on subordinate clauses on Tuesday 9/22.

Pre-Algebra/Algebra. You have homework every night. If you forget what your assigned pages are please contact me at 978-352-8237 or 781-760-0035 before 8:30 p.m.

GROUP 5

You should be tracking all your steps from when you leave school to when you go to bed. Please do this every day. Write down how much time each activity takes you in preparation for the homework schedule we will put together next week.

Writing:

If you did not finish your work in the Writing Skills book please finish. You should be finished through page 9. This is due to me on Tuesday 9/22.

The draft of your biography will be due on Thursday 9/23. Remember this should be at least three pages, single spaced, Ariel 12 pt font. Be creative! We will draw a picture next week to go along with this biography.

Reading:
Quiz Tuesday 9/15 on The Pearl or Les Miserables. We will be viewing the movies on Wednesday 9/16. Quiz on Friday 9/18 on How Angel Peterson Got His Name.

Students should be reading for 20 minutes in their independent reading books every night. Letter to teacher due Friday 9/18. This letter should tell me about the first 20 minutes that you read. What is happening so far? Did anything really interest you? What do you predict will happen next? This should be at least a one page letter.

History: For next week please. Choose a medieval sport or game that you will research.
DAR: Choose a perspective that you will write from (railroad worker, native American or settler) Write a plan for your DAR paper (at least 10 sentences) Write 10 facts that you learned about the transcontinental railroad and the final spike that you discovered by researching this event.

Science: Come to class on Wednesday with your outline complete. I will be collecting all of them and making one big outline for the class. Homework for next week: p.11 #1-2 and p.20 #1-2. Those who are teaching will be teaching today.

Wordly Wise (Bryan): Complete all parts of Lesson 2 and be prepared for a quiz on the word list on Tuesday 9/22. Remember you are responsible for the spelling, the definition AND the part of speech.

First Day of School

We had a great first day today. I have an awesome class and am looking forward to a great year. We spent a good part of the day getting organized and reviewing expectations. One of the students asked me to post the different sections that should be in each binder on the blog so the can label the sections at home. So here it is!

Most reading work will be done in the notebook that I gave you which should be kept in or with this binder.

Since I do not have all of you for Math, Foreign Language or Wordly Wise you should check with your teacher for that class and ask them how they expect your binder to be set up.

We have also scheduled all of the quizzes on your summer reading and we will be seeing some movie versions of those books/plays as well. The dates are as follows:

WELCOME GROUP 5 BLUE STUDENTS

Welcome to Group 5 Blue!! I hope you had a fun and relaxing summer.! I am so happy to have all of you in my class. I have many great things planned for our group and I know we will have a fun and exciting year together.

You might have noticed on the supplies list that was sent out that I asked for you to set up your subject binders in a specific way. I would like you to bring all of the "binder" materials to class with you on the first day. We will label them together and discuss how you will be organizing the folders for the year.

I hope you enjoyed your summer reading! (at least a little bit?) Please bring your action time-lines to class on the first day as well. I will be collecting them and we will be discussing the readings right away while the information is fresh in our minds.
