• Select a new independent reading book and bring it to school.

• Science Outline Chapter 2 Sections 3 and 4 due. Questions for sections 3 and 4 due as well.

Friday 12/4

• Actively read "A Summer's Reading" We discussed what active reading is in class. Pay particular attention to "point of view" (First or third person) Highlight any vocabulary words that are new. Clues to setting, climax, antagonist and protagonist should be highlighted. You may be given a quiz on Friday:) If you were listening in class on Wednesday you know what the questions will be!!!

We have come up with a due date for the optional history extra credit. I thought I would post it now in case anyone wants to get started. The topic is: "Start Your Own Medieval Country." Students will design and specify their domain in a one page essay, single spaced, Arial font 12, 1" margins on top, bottom, and sides. This is due on January 6th.

Note to Pre-Algebra/Algebra students. Please make sure you are using your graph paper notebooks. Your graph paper notebooks will count as a test grade for quarter 2. All calculations must be done in them in the proper format. See me if you have any questions.

Basic Writing High School:

Please complete pages in Writing Skills book on Compound subjects and predicates, semi-colons and conjunctive adverbs pp. 24-29. This is due on Monday.

I am also still waiting on two things from many of you.

• Your 2000 word essay in response to Maya Angelou's quote: "When someone shows themself to you believe them."

  5B POT LUCK LUNCH: In order to celebrate the completion of our writing project Group 5 Blue will have a pot luck lunch. All students will sign up to bring in something yummy to share. The students worked very hard on this assignment and deserve to have their efforts rewarded with some food and fun!

  Writing: Respond to the following question about Food Incorporated.
• Pretend you are grocery shopping for your family. Pick 10 items you would select at the grocery store and 10 items you would not pick at the grocery store in order to create healthy meals and snacks for your family for one week. Let me know how you would prepare this food and why you made the choices you made. This should be two pages, single-spaced, 12 pt Ariel Font, 1 inch margins.

HIGH SCHOOL:

Basic Writing:

• I will be collecting your writing binders on Monday 10/26. Remember your binders should have every writing assignment you have done this quarter in them in chronological order.The assignments were: Goals Essay, How To Essay, TV Prompt, 2000 Word Essay, Lamb to Slaughter and The Biography. This binder will count as a test grade.
  
• The only assignment that will not be there is the biography which is due on Friday October 30th. Remember this biography should be 5 pages, 12 pt Ariel font, single spaced. I gave you two class periods to interview your subject so all further interviews must be done on your own time. I expect the biographies to be truly biographical and factual.

• All make up grammar work is due on Monday 10/26 as well. I will be collecting grammar books on that day and any incomplete work will be given a zero. You should have completed up to page 23 in your grammar book excluding pages 10 and 11.
  

Algebra/Pre-Algebra: You will have homework every night Monday through Friday. If you find yourself without homework and we have not specifically talked about it something is wrong and you should call me at home. 978-352-8237. Hi Everyone. We went over all these assignments last week and put them in your assingment books but please read over the blog and make sure you have all of these assignments. The quarter ends this Friday so there is no wiggle room for late assignments. Remember the DAR is due in its final form on Monday November 2nd so if you would like me to edit it for you please have the draft completed this week. It must be 600-1000 words.

• History: Review Chapters 5 and 6. We have people presenting these chapters but the rest of you should be prepared to ask questions. You will have a quiz on sections 5 and 6 on Monday 11/2.

• Clark School Halloween Party. You can wear your costume to school as long as you are comfortable for your classes. No masks or weapons are aloud. The party will take from 2-3. Parents may join us at that time.

HIGH SCHOOL:

• Complete through page 23 in your Writing Skills book. (Adjectives and Adverbs) Please call if you do not understand something.
• 5 Paragraph Essay on Lamb to Slaughter is due. Choose one of the three questions and answer it in the form of a 5 paragraph essay citing examples from the short story to support your answer.

GROUP 5:

• History: We will have History during our writing time. Robby and John be prepared to present your outlines to the class. We will be reviewing sections 3 and 4.
• Wordly Wise Lesson 4 Activities are due and you will have a quiz on Lesson 4.
• Read your independent reading book for 20 minutes
• Writing: Your biographies have been given back for you to do your final edits and revisions. Please get them back to me by the end of the week for grading.
  

Wednesday October 14th

• I will be introducing our long term writing project: A Humorous Story. We will be abandoning all writing homework other than this for the rest of the quarter beginning on Monday Otober 19th.Starting on Monday, October 19. You will spend every writing class working on this AND you will be expected to work on this story for homework every night for at least 20-30 minutes.
• Read your independent reading book for 20 minutes.
• Science: We will be finishing section 5 and preparing for your test which will be divided into two parts. You will be tested on Sections 1 and 2 during study hall on 10/27 and you will be tested on Sections 3, 4 and 5 on November 4th.

REMINDERS:

Field Trips:
As part of our continued studies of Medieval History, Groups 5G and 5B will enjoy a banquet fit for a king at Medieval Manor on October 21st. Students will dine without utensils on: bread and cheese medieval pizza, ginger carrot soup, family style mussels, one large beef, rib per person, salad with balsamic dipping sauce, herb roasted chicken, broccoli and carrots with hollandaise dipping sauce, mock – mead with a token for a refill, after dinner mints Groups 5B and 5G will be going to Medieval Manor to complement their study of Medieval history. We will be dining on medieval cuisine without utensils and playing games common to this historical period.

Groups 5B and 5G will be going to Biogen IDEC Community Lab on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 to do an experiment on the transformation of E. Coli. Students will don goggles, lab coats and gloves in order to work with scientific laboratory equipment to investigate DNA proteins. We will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. and return by pick-up at 3:00 p.m. Students are asked to bring a bag lunch (no glass) and non-messy snack to eat in the van in case our lab runs longer. Please wear appropriate clothing if there is a chance of inclement weather as we may have to walk from the parking space to the lab. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see how interesting and exciting a career in science can be!
